Chicago is rocking the stage in Johannesburg leaving audiences thrilled

Having watched and loved the movie, and obsessively listened to the music over and over again, finally getting to see Chicago on stage at the Teatro was something I have been looking forward to since the world tour with a South African cast was announced. Even more exciting was hearing that Craig Urbani would be reprising the role of Billy Flynn alongside the incredible Carmen Pretorius and Samantha Peo in the roles of Roxie and Velma respectively. I became a fan of Craig Urbani when he played Hook in the 2014 Janice HoneymanPantomime. His comical performance of “Fireball” has stuck with me ever since.

Cell Block Tango gave me goosebumps and when Carmen and Craig performed “We both reached for the gun” I had to make sure I remained in my seat I was so excited. Ilse Klink played a really sophisticated Mama Morton and Grant Towers was such a great “Mister Cellophane” – I don’t think there was an audience member who didn’t want to hug him after the show.

As an audience, we really shouldn’t love Velma Kelly much, because she is after all, a real bitch – but how can you not adore her when the absurdly talented Samantha Peo is bringing her to life?

And Carmen – Watching her makes me wonder how much longer we will be able to hold on to her in SA – she is phenomenal. The world want’s her. We are not worthy!

This tour of Chicago is fast approaching it’s 200th performance having spent 16 weeks in China after a season in New Zealand before coming home to a successful run in Cape Town.

The production closes in Joburg on 26th May before heading off to Europe and it is a show you must see. It’s not often that we get to see world class, long running musical shows like Chicago and it would be a shame to miss it. Whether you are a lover of theatre, a lover of the film or just need a great evening of high-energy, musically-thrilling, Bob Fosse style choreographed brilliance packed into a 3-hour show – go on over to Computicket right now and book your seats, before you can’t anymore. You will regret missing this one – I assure you.…/chic…/1232477187/0/88161934
